For Chiaroscuro, Matt Doyle will re-paint RECESS's exhibition space during the first week of March. His method will involve fixing irregularities and imperfections in the walls, painting the walls black, then re-painting them white. At the reception on Saturday, March 8th, photographs documenting this process will be exhibited alongside the results of the re-painting.
Matt Doyle (b. 1989) worked with RECESS from 2011-2012, volunteering his time whenever an extra hand was needed. He assisted in the preparation of exhibitions, hanging lights and mopping floors; he attended weekly team meetings and mediated conflicts between staff members. In the spring of 2012, Doyle curated a three-part improvised music series at RECESS entitled Portland Eye and Ear.
Doyle currently lives in Los Angeles, CA, and is finishing the sound design for Automated Futures, a film documenting the length of a privately owned fiber optic cable used for high frequency trading.
RECESS produced a publication for this exhibition, printed in-house on a Brother HL-2270DW.
